DS Smith embarks on UK corrugated plant expansion

24 July 2012

The UK’s leading corrugated packaging supplier has begun major construction work for the £6 million expansion of its factory in Belper, Derbyshire.

The company says the expansion at the facility – the first phase of an “ambitious plan to add 50% to the site’s production capacity” – will include a state-of-the-art printing press, and will enable the factory to continue to produce recycled corrugated packaging for some of the world’s largest brands.

Graham Tattam, managing director at DS Smith Packaging in Belper, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment. It is a massive vote of confidence in the team at Belper and will ensure we continue to produce industry-leading quality packaging.”

The DS Smith Packaging factory in Belper employs 170 people, and has been in the town since the early 1960s. It specialises in the manufacture of printed corrugated boxes, which can be seen on supermarket shelves across the UK.

The company’s comprehensive range encompasses retail ready packaging, transit cases, consumer units, packs printed for gift and POS applications, and heavy duty industrial products.

DS Smith Packaging is part of DS Smith Plc, an international supplier of recycled packaging for consumer goods. Through the combined operations of DS Smith Packaging, DS Smith Paper and DS Smith Recycling, the Group is a leading force in high performance recycled packaging.
