Delta Packaging Research and Development expansion plan
Due to many internal and external constraints printing and converting direct food contact packaging has become a very complex art. Creating a safe, hygienic, sustainable, single use carton which is fit for purpose are key aspirations for the modern printing industry. The quest for sustainable packaging that does not interfere with the recycling, composting or repulping processes are also key drivers at Delta Packaging. Working with our raw material partners we scrutinise the sustainability of the inks, coating, varnishes and adhesives in an attempt to reduce our impact on the environment across our entire supply chain.
As Delta already uses low migration / low odour inks and coatings these new products have the advantage of providing cartons that are safe for our vast customer base but also when carton and die cutting waste is sent for recycling, we are able to reduce the chemical load on the deinking process and therefore facilitate production at the recycled board mills and the overall impact on the environment.
The recent investment by Delta Packaging in a ten colour High Definition Flexo wide web printing press will allow the company to further develop new printing substrates specifically designed for our customer's exact requirements. As the new system uses water based inks this will lower impact on the environment and maintain the safety of the cartons to our customers. By combining our knowledge of design, functionality, legislation and sustainability, Delta will be able to develop the next generation of sustainable printed packaging at a competitive price for the many different markets across Europe.
Also as a member of the Regulatory & Communications Working Group of Pack2go Europe, the responsibility of developing new packaging formats that ease the issue of littering in the environment is a key element of the design process. During the development phase of our products, all sectors of the production process are considered and, most importantly, the end use of the product. How the finished packaging can be recaptured without wasting the precious fibres present are also key considerations and also if the product gets into the environment, will it degrade in nature with minimal adverse effects.
In summary the complexities for today's carton manufacturer are a delicate balance of compliance with the current and future legislation, sustainable design, production efficiency, service and price. But also being able to evolve as various changes occur and as the needs of our customers change. These challenges are met by the structure of the teams we have here in Delta Packaging and their dedication to our valued customers.
