Danone hits landfill diversion targets with green scheme

16 November 2012

Food product manufacturer Danone has announced that more than 500,000 yogurt pots have been diverted from UK landfill since the launch of its recycling fundraising scheme in 2010.

The Activia Yogurt Brigade, which was created to recycle pots from its Danone Activia and Shape brands, helps turn the packaging waste into new products such as shopping bags, bins and garden benches.

Run in conjunction with waste packaging collection business TerraCycle, the scheme has encouraged schools, individuals and other organisations to recycle the pots.

In return, the customer is rewarded with points that can be redeemed as a cash donation to a charity of their choice.

TerraCycle then uses the waste packaging to produce a diverse range of recycled generic plastic products.

Virginie Guise, senior brand manager at Activia said the company was “delighted” that customers had embraced the scheme and saved more than 500,000 pots in the process.

“We encourage schools, businesses and individuals who love Danone Activia, Actimel and Shape products to set up a collection point and start their own Activia Yogurt Brigade and help us reach the next milestone of saving 1,000,000 million yogurt pots from UK landfill,” she added.
