Packaging buyers and manufacturers in France ranked recyclable materials and ecodesign as the next most important factors in driving innovation in the medium-term, followed by regulations for 43% of buyers; and new technologies and new materials for the manufacturers.

The opinions were aired in the Packaging Observatory survey run in September 2011 among 782 packaging industry professionals in France, setting the scene for the 2012 edition of the biennial exhibition, due to take place in Paris on 19-22 November.

The survey, carried out by GoudLink/MRCC on behalf of Emballage-Comexposium, was answered by: 368 packaging and equipment buyers; 296 packaging manufacturers; and 118 equipment manufacturers and distributors.

Overall, the survey results showed that French packaging buyers are optimistic regarding “the medium-term development of their production, having reinforced their already ambitious vision expressed in 2010.”

Some 64% expect a rise in production (compared to 57% in 2010).

This growth is driven by the liquid food (69%), retail and services (69%), and health and pharmacy (69%) sectors. Buyers from the intermediate goods industry confirm the upswing set in motion last year: 66% expect a rise in production.

For packaging buyers, development leverage continues to stem from expansion into new markets (55%) and investment in R&D and innovation (55%).

Some 50% intend to invest in new equipment.

Among packaging manufacturers in France, the survey found that 56% expect growth for the 2012-14 period: “In terms of operating margin, the situation continues to improve: 71% see stability (51%) or growth (20%) for the period,” the survey reported.

In terms of exports, the French packaging manufacturers interviewed make 21% of their turnover on average from export sales – 38% are expecting this figure to rise for their company, with 53% anticipating exports to remain stable.
