A new pilot project in Germany will determine whether bags made from BASF’s Ecovio FS Film biodegradable plastics are suitable for collecting organic waste.
The three-month test, starting on April 6 in the district of Bad Dürkheim, will be conducted by waste management service AWB and will also investigate how the bags behave on a large scale at an organic composting plant owned by the waste management company GML. Each of some 65,000 households in Bad Dürkheim will receive 10 bags free of charge and be encouraged to use them to collect food waste and then dispose of them via the organic waste bin.
Ecovio FS Film is a new development, made of the partially bio-based Ecoflex FS and PLA (polylactic acid), which is obtained from corn starch. Like the biodegradable waste itself, the Ecovio molecules are broken down by microorganisms with the aid of enzymes.
