Competition fierce at London's Leading Packaging Show

The entrants for the Lions' Lair competition at Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London have been unveiled. Airpack Systems, Pringraf and Reproflex3 are among the exhibitors pitching their latest packaging innovations to an expert panel of judges, in front of a live audience, in order to win best in show.

Lions' Lair will take centre stage Wednesday 1 October from 13:30 in the Keynote Theatre. This year's panel includes: Duncan Castle, Technical and Packaging Manager at Tesco; Paul Jenkins, Managing Director at The PackHub; Chris May, Packaging Manager at John Lewis Partnership and Neil Pedliham, Design Manager at Superdrug.

First into the Lair will be Airpack Systems (Stand A14), with its new six and twelve inflatable bottle beer packs. The inflatable bags are 100% recyclable, quick and easy to use and offer maximum protection during travel.

Italian cardboard packaging company Pringraf (Stand A25) will be looking to impress the judges with it new service - Packly. An innovative and frictionless way to create packaging, set to simplify the lives of packaging designers, brand owners and printing companies. Packly makes it possible create die-cut templates and order short runs of packaging as well prototypes or mock-ups comparable to the industrial standards.

Also competing for the top accolade is Reproflex3 (Stand GB44) with its new product Packlinc. An app scanning digital gateway that allows users to scan hidden codes within graphics and then link back to the chosen URL. The app controls the URL destination whilst learning about consumers in real time with Packlinc's analytics system.

Visitors at the show will also have a chance to grill the brave exhibitors and vote for their winning product. The winning company will be awarded The Lions' Lair accolade and the results will be announced at the show once all the votes have been counted.

The show will also play host to a full range of exhibitors, and show favourite The BIG Packaging Debate, where a panel of packaging professionals will debate the topic 'Is Legislation stopping you innovate?' Among the panel will be Dick Searle, CEO at The Packaging Federation and Stacey Irving, Managing Director of Body Armour Skincare. Chairing the debate is Kevin Vyse, UK Head of IoPP, who comments:

"In an increasingly global market place it is inevitable that central controlling legislation is needed. However the question is whether the people making the legislation really understand the dynamics of the business they are legislating for.

"It seems the inevitable consequence is that packaging is becoming less creative and less innovative to avoid and risk, whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is what we are about to find out at this year's Big Packaging Debate where both sides of this argument should be heard."

The Big Packaging Debate will take place Tuesday 30 September at 15:30 in the Keynote Theatre.
