Cardia secures European patent protection for its bioplastics technology

Cardia Bioplastics, a subsidiary of SECOS Group Limited (ASX: SES), is pleased to announce that it secured European patent protection for its bioplastics technology. The European Patent 2052030 was granted for Cardia's unique and innovative compostable resin formulations and production processes.

Nine new Cardia Compostable, BiohybridT and PPC-starch technology patents have been granted in 2015. These new patents expand Cardia Bioplastics growing intellectual property portfolio of 11 patent families, with twenty-eight patents so far granted in Europe, USA, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa, and thirty-nine more patents pending registration. The patents protect the composition formulations, manufacturing processes and application technology invented by Cardia's Research & Development team.

On receiving the news, Dr. Frank Glatz, Chief Executive Officer of Cardia Bioplastics said, "This marks an important milestone for Cardia Bioplastics. These granted patents protect the intellectual property of the Company and further support the technical differentiation of our globally certified Cardia Compostable and independently validated lower carbon foot print Cardia BiohybridT product offering."

Cardia's proprietary compostable resins technology delivers homogeneous and well compatabilised materials that are differentiated in their product performance. Cardia Compostable films are strong and tough with good sealability and long shelf life. They display superior puncture, tear resistance and impact toughness. Cardia Compostable products are breathable and therefore great for controlling odour and dissipating moisture. The Cardia technical team has proven with third parties the Cardia Compostable products composting performance in industrial operations and at home.

Cardia Compostable resins are certified biodegradable and compostable to international standards including Europe EN13432, USA ASTM D6400, Australia AS4736 and Japan Green Pla and are used in a wide variety of applications from films, bags and moulded products to waste management items.

The biodegradable and compostable plastics market is projected to continue its rapid growth due to increased Government regulation of environmental issues and waste management. Organic waste diversion is being implemented around the world using compostable waste management bags. Leading brand owners and consumers increasingly demand sustainable packaging solutions. 'Markets and Markets Research Group' predicts the global biodegradable and compostable plastics market to be worth more than US$ 3.4 billion by 2020.[1]

Dr. Frank Glatz continues, "Customers like our resins and finished products. With our strong patent portfolio, biodegradable and compostable certifications and high product performance, Cardia is gaining traction in the international compostable plastics market."
