Cardia claims skincare industry eco packaging first

27 July 2012

Sustainable resins supplier Cardia Bioplastics is claiming a world first in the skincare industry, partnering organic skincare company Ecocare to produce its “eco-friendly facial wipes enclosed in eco-friendly packaging”.

The biodegradable facial wipes are made from 100% natural certified organic cotton, while the packaging incorporates Cardia’s renewable and recyclable Biohybrid resin, derived from renewable resources.

The resulting combination is said by the two Australia-based companies to have a “significantly lower carbon footprint than its competitors”.

Callan Taylor, Ecocare marketing director, says: “Environmental sustainability is engrained in the Ecocare business model, and our range of skin care wipes have been built around this philosophy.

“Globally, we will be the first manufacturer of organic wet wipes to use renewable packaging solutions. It is a huge coup for us and offers strong product differentiation.”

Cardia’s thermoplastic starch resins have a high renewable content – capable of reducing carbon footprint by up to 50% when incorporated into standard packaging or plastic products.

Cardia Bioplastics MD Dr Frank Glatz says: “We hope that others in the consumer healthcare and beauty industry will follow the Ecocare’s lead and seek out sustainable packaging solutions.”

Currently available in Australian retail priced at A$7.99, Ecocare is looking to move into export markets “in the coming months”.
