The transition of linerless label systems from a niche product to mainstream has received a boost with Brazil’s recent introduction of new solid waste legislation, according to linerless labelling specialist Ravenwood Packaging.
The liner of self-adhesive labels can no longer be landfilled or incinerated and must now be collected and recycled.
To avoid the need for ‘complex’ new recycling systems, the alternative is to dispense with backing, which would save waste and additional packaging costs, says Ravenwood managing director Paul Beamish. He believes that the new waste legislation creates an opportunity for his company to grow in Brazil.
“We already supply linerless labels to two out of the three top named supermarket brands in Brazil – Carrefour and Walmart – and we will be looking to see whether we can forge some new partnerships to enable us to help establish some world retail packaging trends in the Brazilian market.”
The company has 11 coaters installed and manufacturing linerless labelling in the UK, Scandinavia, Benelux, Spain, Australia and the USA.
Ravenwood in the UK is already supplying for chilled foods, fresh produce, cakes, bottled products, health and personal care items and household goods.
The company will be exhibiting at Pack Expo Las Vegas 26-28 September.
