Ardagh announces €85m Boxal group purchase

3 January 2012

Fast out of the traps in 2012 with acquisition news, Ardagh Group today announced it has agreed to buy the Boxal metal packaging group in a deal worth €85m.

With manufacturing plants principally in France and the Netherlands, Boxal is an aluminium container manufacturer supplying aerosols and bottles for global brands including L’Oreal, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Dove, Pantene and Nivea.

Previously owned by the Exal Corporation, Boxal has a total annual capacity of over 900 million containers.

Originally formed in Ireland in 1932 as a glass packaging manufacturer, Ardagh signaled its global expansion into metal packaging with the acquisition of Impress late in 2010, followed in March 2011 by the purchase of Fi.Par, a metal packaging manufacturer in Italy supplying the food and aerosol markets in Italy and Greece.

Ardagh Group CEO Niall Wall said: “We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Boxal, which will assist us in further diversifying into the aluminium can market, enhance our product offering and add value to our current activities.”

Ardagh Group now operates 88 manufacturing plants in 25 countries, employs 14,000 people and has annual global sales in excess of €3.2 billion.
