Another (corrugated) brick in The Wall

Smurfit Kappa UK’s specially designed corrugated packs are featuring as part of a touring rock concert’s ‘iconic’ stage set.

For Pink Floyd’s European and US tour of its 1979 album The Wall, a 240ft wide wall is to be the centrepiece. It is made up of 400 corrugated cartons, or ‘bricks’ supplied by Smurfit Kappa UK.

Brian Smith, Designer for Smurfit Kappa XXL/Heavy Duty, had to ensure the bespoke bricks were strong yet light in weight so they could be easily manoeuvred.

The wall is used as a giant cinema screen for images and animations to be projected onto, so the ‘bricks’ had to be matt white in colour, smooth in texture, and in line with health and safety, they had to be fireproofed.

The boxes that feature in the show are built up brick-by-brick throughout the production, until the finale sees the wall of 400 bricks come crashing down. The 400 Smurfit Kappa ‘bricks’ are recycled after each show and can be reprocessed as new packaging in as little as two weeks.

So while the show is designed to have a great impact on the audience, the wall is designed to have the least impact on the environment, says Smurfit Kappa.
