The Summit of the dilemma

Packaging Today looks at how the revamped Starpack Awards will also tackle the critical issues of the industry


The Starpack Packaging Summit, a strategic business seminar – “The Packaging Dilemma – The Consumer Challenge”, will provide an insight into consumer-led packaging dilemmas and possible solutions through the eyes of major retailers, brand owners, environmental pressure groups, environmental organisations and designers.

The speakers – Friends of the Earth; Marks & Spencer; British Brands Group, PI3 Design, Dragon Brands, VALPAK, corporate responsibility specialists Radley Yeldar and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) – will attempt to answer the thorny topics that make up the multitude of dilemmas facing the sector and provide possible solutions.

Set to revitalise the Starpack Awards 2008 in London on May 22, the summit has been launched by IOP: The Packaging Society (a division of IOM3) in recognition of the outstanding role packaging plays in providing benefits to consumer lifestyles and the marketing benefits it offers the supply chain.

Bernie Rickinson, chief executive, IOM3, explains: “The Packaging Society must be pro-active to deliver critical mass to the current packaging sustainability debate. It is vitally important that all elements of the packaging supply chain understand not only the issues, but are aware of the innovation effort.”

The seminar programme will revolve around every aspect of packaging as it affects the consumer, retailer, brand owner, designer, and packaging and material supplier, with today’s most critical headline environmental issues taking centre stage.

The morning session will deal with the dilemma of how consumers are no longer prepared to pay only lip service to environmental issues and how they demand real sustainable options from brand owners, retailers and the packaging supply community. The afternoon session will work on creating workable solutions and what can be done to create real consumer visibility and forward corporate responsibility and the green credentials of the supply chain?
