CAPS & CLOSURES: Dior innovates with Eastman Glass

1 December 2009

For a packaging redesign of Dior’s Hydraction products French company SAF created a cap with a hood made from a single piece of material and achieved what is claimed to be ‘the first glass looka- like cap of its kind’.

The existing jar body could not be modified. The cap had to fit the glass jar perfectly to assure full air tightness. And it had to be mass manufactured for use on three different Hydraction products, with differently sized jar dimensions.

For a ‘flawless’ finish, the gate, or notch where the plastic was injected was made ‘virtually invisible’ inside the dot of the ‘i’ in Dior.

SAF also developed an innovative over-moulding technique to ensure the cap sits tightly on the container opening, for which it has submitted a patent application.

Schulman provided expertise in copolyesters and its European product manager Christophe Cario saw potential in the ‘weight, touch and sound resonance’ of Eastman Glass Polymer materials. One of them passed all tests for aesthetics, sensorial effects and chemical resistance.

“The grade is fully amorphous, so it does not crystallise when used for thick walled applications, is chemically resistant and exhibits superior mechanical properties - ideal for the development of complex and luxurious packaging,” concludes Valérie Bouvignies, specification sales cosmetics & personal care market,
