Big green effort by Italian Sabox

6 January 2010

In 2008, Sada Group member Sabox, a manufacturer of corrugated board packaging, based in the tomato and pasta producing region of southern Italy, set out to become a thoroughly green organisation. An initiative called the GreenProject stemmed from a strong belief that opportunities lie in environmentally responsible, sustainable, and eco-friendly packaging practices and products, explains Cristofaro Panariello, chief finance officer at Sabox.

Testament to this, Packaging Today saw Sabox presented with the European Recycling Award 2009 during a ceremony last October at the European Parliament in Brussels. Sabox products use recycled and 100% recyclable paper. From collection centres, paper is taken to a Sada mill, recycled again and made into new products.

The Sabox GreenBoxX and GreenTray, registered brands for an American type box and a tray designed for the food industry, are made from GreenPaper. This high performance, lighter weight paper gives shipping and environmental benefits, claims Sabox. Customers using GreenBoxX include Pastificio Lucio Garofalo SpA and Antonio Amato Molini e Pastifici SpA, for pasta, and Crown Cork Srl, for tinplate containers. La Doria SpA uses the GreenTray for tomatoes and fruit juices.

GreenProject has involved customers, suppliers, institutions and non-profit organisations. For example, so-called ‘green’ trucks carry larger volumes and full loading; Sabox requests responsibly sourced raw materials; and staff car-pool to reduce fuel emissions.
