A buyer’s guide to metal detectors
22 September 2009
The demands of supermarket customers and variable and changeable due diligence policies can turn the task of selecting and buying metal detection equipment into a headache. The general advice from Fortress
Technology for purchasing an inspection system is the same for processing and end of line applications:
• it should be easy to use and quick to set up – keep it simple, as time is money
• detectors can provide sensitivity down to 0.2mm of ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel metals by
using powerful digital signal processing (DSP) techniques, protect against potential litigation proceedings
and it will have the technology to ‘learn’ your products and to adjust to compensate
• stability is important - for harsh washdown conditions IP69K certification is recommended, also immunity
to vibration and electrical noise
• price is a concern for every capital purchase investment - price is linked to value when the inspection
system offers the required features. Customised solutions can be the best option. It is value that is
important, not just pounds and pence or euros and cents
• reasonably priced replacement parts that are always in stock to cut downtime, will keep down the cost of
ownership or ‘global cost’.
