Serialisation: time to act now

28 October 2009

Many countries are preparing to adopt coding requirements similar to French CIP13 and serialisation requirements such as those established in Turkey. In light of these regulations in Europe and elsewhere globally, pharmaceutical manufacturers need to consider their packaging information requirements and promptly employ serialisation solutions.

Preparing for future regulations does not require prior knowledge or massive investments in expensive technology. Manufacturers can invest in flexible serialisation solutions that will meet changing requirements.

Configurable serialisation solutions have the ability to adapt and scale to meet new requirements without extensive customisation. On the other hand, customised solutions must often be replaced, thus increasing time and investment to respond to change.

It is essential for manufacturers to employ a solution that can scale, as more complex regulatory demands surface.

Many leading packagers are taking a strategic view of serialisation by addressing the need for bi-directional communication with a configurable Packaging Execution System (PES) platform. A PES integrates all packaging line information systems, including vision inspection, line management and serialisation.

The ever-changing landscape of serialisation regulations require today’s packaging operations to be flexible; and inability to respond to change can lead to deploying dead-end technology. Manufacturers who choose configurable serialisation solutions that leverage a PES infrastructure will be able to respond more quickly to change.
