Sealed Air Solutions iron out DIY problems

15 May 2008

Leading shrink packaging systems and materials supplier Sealed Air is targeting the DIY market with its range of Cryovac® polyolefin shrink films.

This highly versatile wrapping is ideal for use with its Shanklin® range of equipment - providing a 'one-stop' packaging solution, which is perfect for the fast-paced and demanding DIY goods market with the ability to wrap large and small odd shaped items, such as plugs, painting kits, bathroom items, shelves, etc.

The superb clear and gloss Cryovac® films from Sealed Air provides customers with more attractive points of sale presentation, whilst resin and extrusion technologies give the films superior strength, tear and tamper resistance - perfect for bulky DIY and home products.

Cryovac® polyolefin films are not prone to the monthly raw materials price fluctuations which standard polyethylene suffers from. In addition, roll length is two to three times longer than typical polyethylene because of the lighter gauge (usually around 19 microns versus 40 microns).

This reduces the number of roll changeovers, therefore downtime, while having a positive impact on the environment thanks to source reduction. This can make the difference to retailers, who are under pressure to use more "green" packaging.

A prestigious hardware and DIY goods manufacturer in southern Europe has already seen the benefits of Sealed Air's complete wrapping solution and is using its Shanklin® HSI-750 and the company's Cryovac® IMPACT™ polyolefin shrink film to wrap ironing boards. Aluminium steps are also being packaged with a Shanklin® HSI-950 system and a Cryovac® IMPACT™ film.

The four-machine Shanklin® range of high-speed intermittent sealing machines can wrap up to 60 packs per minute and are suitable for the entire range of Sealed Air films. The continuous rotary side sealing feature makes the equipment suitable for a large number of products.

Shanklin® systems provide great flexibility and can cope with packages of virtually any length providing there is a conveyor between the machine and the shrink tunnel.

Sealed Air Shrink Packaging Business Unit's project development manager in South Europe, Alessio Malloci, said: "The Shanklin® systems and the Cryovac® films end production line inefficiency and provide reduced operating costs by allowing the processing of a wide variety of products with just one easy to use machine. It is the ideal combination of wrapping equipment and materials that is perfectly placed to help users adapt to the changes to be introduced by the European Union with the relaxation of the rules governing pack sizes. Very soon the focus will be firmly on the twin attributes of flexibility and adaptability."

He continued: "Therefore, packages will not only get both larger and smaller but they will also come in all sorts of odd shapes. Only those users with packaging solutions that can cope with anything and everything required of them will ensure that their products are top sellers in all markets."
