estergreen PCR1 rPET lidding a key component of M&S Simply Foods Fruit Collection 400g pack

14 July 2008

Marks & Spencer has launched a new retail pack featuring a significant recycled component in a polyester tray and, for the first time in the world, within the lidding film. The packaging has been introduced as part of M&S’s 100 point ‘eco-plan’, Plan A, which will impact on every part of M&S over the next five years. This includes an aim to reduce waste from its stores and operations, reduce the weight of its packaging, and to only use packaging that can be easily recycled or composted.

Marks & Spencer worked with Orchard House, FFP Packaging Solutions and Dupont Teijin Films to launch the new 400g M&S Simply Foods Fruit Collection 400g pack, which features FFP’s Estergreen PCR1 lidding film.

Estergreen PCR1 makes use of a 23µ Dupont Teijin polyester film, and features an FFP anti-mist coating, enhancing on-shelf appeal and improving product visibility. The Dupont Teijin material incorporates 30% post-consumer recycled food safe material from recognised waste streams, derived principally from plastic bottles.

As Dr Mark Caul, Senior Packaging Technologist, Foods, M&S put it, “This is a world first for flexible films and represents a milestone that only a year ago we would have thought to be technically too complex to make commercially viable. Innovative and environmentally based packaging continues to be our primary packaging driver and the film technology is an example of this work.”
